Mega Millions Lottery Scam Targets Consumers by Phone, Text, and Email

There is never a cost to claim a legitimate lottery reward, according to a statement made by Mega Millions on its own official website.

A phone call, text message, or email says that you have won the Mega Millions lottery jackpot and asks for a fee to claim the prize.

A reader sent us an email in November 2022 claiming to have been the target of a scam.

Scammers got in touch with the victim and said they had won the Mega Millions lotto jackpot.

The victim was instructed to visit a nearby Dollar General shop by the con artists, who also gave her a "claim check number."

The victim was asked to wire $475, perhaps through Western Union, in order to claim the fake prize.

Thankfully, the person did not appear to have sent any money to the scammers.

To be clear, Mega Millions published on its own official website that "there is never a fee to claim a real lottery prize."
